The wilderness is one of man’s greatest friends, but it can also be his greatest enemy. The wild can be a refuge for people seeking to explore a hellacious landscape.
That’s why wilderness themed movies and films have dominated the industry. No matter where you’re watching from, the tales of man versus nature ought to impress you.
In this blog post I’ll review the best survival in the Wilderness movies that you’ll enjoy watching.
- Crawl (2019)
Crawl is my all-time favourite movie and it has a simple setting that keeps you anxious the entire time as you watch. It’s about a young woman that takes care of her father, who is unable to leave his house when there is a storm evacuation order.
The two try their best to survive the flood waters that keep rising in their house. At some point a giant alligator finds its way in and they have to survive through this too.
- Adrift (2018)
The movie is about two young people in love. They agree to sail a 44’ yacht in an attempt to deliver it to a rich couple.
Nothing could go wrong, but in between their sailing, a storm hits and the boat gets lost. In a few minutes, the movie twists from a romance story to a survival one.
- The Shallows
Blake Lively acts in this movie as a medical student and he loves surfing. He goes on a solo surfing trip that goes wrong at some point.
She gets stranded on a rock with a large shark circling around her. To make it back to land she’ll have to survive the shark, the sun, dehydration and other obstacles.
- The Martian (2015)
The Martian is based on “The Martian” – a self-published novel by Andy Weir. It’s about the story of a botanist who is marooned on the Red Planet.
The botanist has to figure out how to work things out by being his own crew so that he can survive long enough until a rescue team arrives.
- The Revenant (2015)
Thanks to this movie, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Academy Award for the Best Actor. It also contributed to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s winning his second Oscar.
It’s about the story of a frontiersman left for dead, but he survives. He has to find his way out of the wilderness, and in the process he has to battle with all sorts of horrors.
- All is Lost (2013)
Robert Redford received a lot of acclaim for this solo, nearly silent performance in the All is Lost movie. He acts as a sailor whose boat collides with a shipping container.
He is lost at sea, has no means of communicating with the outside world, and his GPS equipment is lost. He tries to find his way out by improvising his own technology.
- Kon-Tiki (2012)
Kon-Tiki has some few elements of a throwback adventure film. The movie is about a crew being led by a Norwegian explorer in the 40’s.
They try to sail through the Pacific on a balsa-wood raft. Through their journey they face storms, sharks and many dangers of the open sea.
Although it sounds like a fantastical movie, it’s actually based on a true story. The real raft is displayed in a museum in Oslo.
- The Grey (2011)
Surviving the Alaskan wilderness is hard after a plane crash. The main character has something more frightening to fight – a pack of wolves that keep following him.
- I Am Legend (2007)
Will Smith stars as a virologist living alone in New York City. This is after a virus that was meant to cure cancer gets out and mankind is swept away.
The actor has to endure isolation and fight off some vampire-like mutants created by the disease.
- Cast Away (2000)
Tom Hanks plays a Fed Ex whose plane crashes, and he’s left deserted on an island. He has to survive through the elements and isolation since the island is uninhabited.
- The Edge (1997)
Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin star in this film that’s about two men who have to survive the Alaskan Wilderness after a plane crash. They have to survive through the cold, and wild animals.
Another thing to survive is the suspicion that one of them slept with the other one’s wife and deserves punishment.
- 127 Hours (2010)
While hiking alone through Utah’s caverns, the star gets pinned under a boulder, so he has to figure out how he’ll stay alive despite being unable to move.
- Rambo: First Blood (1982)
In this story, John Rambo is a highly trained veteran who is troubled. He has to survive an unexpected run in with the area’s law enforcement.
