Most of the time, especially during holidays and weekends, I like spending time with my wife and children. We love to engage in outdoor activities since we spend most of our time in the house.
Camping is our favorite activity; therefore, I always want to be prepared for it. I always believe that a person needs to prepare themselves for any form of emergency or disaster. Thus, I get excited when it comes to making equipment such as butterfly knives.
The paranoia that comes with always expecting something bad to happen during our camping trips makes me develop the habit of seeing knives, generators, saws, and other equipment as my toys.
Therefore, learning important skills such as making a butterfly knife is essential to me.
numerous platforms could guide you on how to make the butterfly knife. At first, it may seem like a complicated process, but the moment you get the hang of it, you will find how easy and enjoyable it is.
1. Step 1
You first need to be familiar with the anatomy of the butterfly knife. You need to know and understand the different parts and their functions.
- The blade is used for cutting things
- Hinges- they connect the blade to every single handle and also permit the handle to freely rotate until it hits the tang pin
- Tang Pin- It is made of a short metallic rod and its function is to hold the blade steady when it is open.
- Safe Handle- this is the part that one holds when using the knife and performing tricks.
2. Step 2: Materials and Necessary Tools
You will notice that you do not need to have many tools to make a butterfly knife. You can find the materials you need anywhere in your surroundings.
Materials
- Nails
- Gift or credit card
- Popsicle stick
- Nuts
Tools
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pliers
- A drill or thumb tucks
- Binder clips (optional)
3. Step 3: Making the Handle
Gather four popsicle sticks and put them together. Ensure that they are perfectly aligned. You will need to take a marker and accurately draw a ½ centimeter mark from the tipoff the popsicle going downwards.
Get your drill and make a hole on the mark and make a tinier hole that is the size of the diameter of the nail you prefer to use. The result will be four popsicle sticks with holes at the top.
You will take two different popsicle sticks and chop off the sides about one inch of the sticks. You can either use pliers or saw depending on what is available.
4. Step 4: Sticking the Handle parts together
Since you now have all the handle parts ready, it is time to stick them together using glue. Before you stick them together, align everything in a symmetrical order to achieve a perfect handle. In the end, you will have two handle pieces.
5. Step 5: Optional
Here, you will glue nuts at the hole-less end of the handle. The nuts will offer more balance to the soon-to-be knife. You will also experience a better feel due to the added weights.
6. Step 6: Blade Hinges
You will use either a gift card or credit card and cut them into two rectangular shapes. Use a length of five inches wide and one inch long. Put the two pieces together and drill two holes.
Ensure that there is a wide distance between the holes as compared to the ones on the popsicle. Drill a hole at the tip of the popsicle when making the blade for the knife.
7. Step 7: Sticking the Blade
Using a piece of plastic, glue it slightly above the hole you drilled in the blade. Perform the same process on the other side of the blade.
Align the properly to ensure that you do not cover any hole on the blade.
8. Step 8: Pins
In this step, you shall make hinge pins that enable the handle to rotate when performing tricks. Cut off 3.125 cm section of the nail using pliers.
You will use two pins for the handle of the blade and the remaining one will serve as a tang pin. Glue the tang pins so that they remain intact during use. Your butterfly blade is now ready for use.
Conclusion
A homemade popsicle butterfly knife is easy to make since it does not require much. All you need is to do the following:
- Have all the necessary tools
- Get correct measurements
- Follow the correct process.
